Infertility

Infertility is generally defined as inability of couples of reproductive age to conceive within 12 months through unprotected sexual intercourse. Since most couples (approximately 85%) will attain pregnancy within one year, this diagnosis affects about 1 in 6 Australian couples attempting to conceive.

The basic causes of infertility are as follows: 50% female, 35% male, 10% unexplained, and 5 % other causes. There are numerous causes for infertility in both men and women.

While Western Medicine emphasises on monitoring and using hormones to reach pregnancy, Eastern Medicine aims at the health of the whole body. Infertility is a sign of imbalance. Whenever anything happens to our body (bad habits of eating, stress, a bad night of sleep, excessive drinking, etc.) the nervous system can very easily affected and put out of whack, causing imbalance in our body. The imbalance inside us could result in headache, bloating, insomnia, back pain, skin troubles and even infertility.

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to balance out whatever is out of control. Once the functions of the nervous system are restored, then our body can properly function and heal ourselves.

Recent studies show that Traditional Chinese Medicine could regulate the gonadotropin-releasing hormone to induce ovulation and improve the blood flow of uterus and menstrual changes of endometrium. Not only that, it also has effects on patients with infertility resulting from PCOS syndrome, stress, anxiety and immunological disorders.

Acupuncture has also been proven to increase success rates of IVF by nearly twenty percent when administered, in a German study conducted in 2004.

Recently infertility patients are gradually turning to Eastern Medicine to improve their fertility. Eastern medicine doctors have known of the benefits of acupuncture and herbal medicine in the treatment of reproductive health issues long before it was ever studied in the West, with the first known publications on infertility appearing several hundred years ago.
